In medical terminology, an addiction is a chronic neurobiologic disorder that has genetic, psychosocial, and environmental dimensions and is characterised by one of the following: the continued use of a substance despite its detrimental effects, compulsive behaviours regarding the use of a drug, and preoccupation with a drug's use for non-therapeutic purposes (i.e. craving the drug). Addiction is also often accompanied by the presence of deviant behaviours, for instance stealing money and forging prescriptions, that are used to obtain a drug and feed the addiction. Counsellors who may be able to help you if you feel you are exhibiting symptoms of dependency by providing specialist counselling are based in Walthamstow, South West London and Didsbury.
Addiction is a disease that effects around two million people in the UK alone. Addictive behaviour generally involves activities that provide an escape from worries or pain, such as shopping, drinking, gambling, sexual activity, eating, prescribed drugs or spending. It is through this perceived 'escape' that a person may develop long lasting habits that, in some cases, impede on their every-day lives. Addictions often begin when an individual seeks out a particular drug to feel good or to escape mental pain. If you feel a counsellor experienced in addiction counselling may be able to help you we list counsellors in Gloucester, Dalston and Muswell Hill.
Although everybody has habit-forming tendencies to a certain extent, some people are more susceptible due to genetic factors. And while a small amount of addicts are capable of breaking their habits, most need some form of treatment to help them break their addictive behaviour. Counsellors who may be able to help you find the strength to break your cycle of addiction are based in Hampstead, Didcot and Stockport.
Addiction counselling consists of a number of approaches that may be helpful for people with addictive behaviour. Behavioural therapy for example, places emphasis on changing negative behaviour patterns - this can be readily applied to the issue of addiction. Integrative therapy is another option that fuses a variety of psychotherapeutic techniques, thereby providing the therapist with a more flexible way of treating their clients. Counsellors who can assist you in overcoming addictive behaviour are available in the areas of North London, Brent Cross and Teddington.
The special counselling needs of addicted clients are unique and counselling will respect that the clients needs are at the core of the therapy and will work towards freedom from addiction.
